Agreed - for all my issues with it, it has one of the best last lines of any book I've read.

I just read it for the first time a few months ago, at the behest of a friend who swore this was the rare fantasy novel that was well written and shades-of-grayish. I'm fairly picky about these things, and I mostly liked it -- all the criticisms you mention here are valid, but at least on first read, I found myself engaged enough in the story to not mind so much. (The only plot thread that really jolted me was the Alessan-and-Catriana storyline, which felt way too pat.)

But what really made Tigana for me was the last line. *That* was awesome.
