I'm actually in the middle of reading Banks's Matter right now, and surprised / pleased at how much I'm enjoying it. I'm probably most fond of Player of Games out of all of his novels - I won't claim that it's his best, but it pushes various buttons of mine exceedingly well.

I think I enjoyed Excession most of his Culture novels - glad you're working through them! Adding the AI viewpoint in addition to the human made Excession compelling for me.

its complexity dwarfs the most complicated game you know, whether that is chess, go, or Advanced Squad Leader

Ha!

I agree that Use of Weapons is one of Banks's best books. I only read it a few months ago and was captivated by it.

Use of Weapons is indeed one of his finest. The title has a number of meanings relevant to the plot, and there's a twist that had me shouting at the book, saying he couldn't possibly have set that up. But he did, and it stands up on re-reads. After a while I've grown weary of the defeats Banks so often subjects his characters to; I joked that nearly every Banks SF novel ends with "really amazingly cool alien-tech rocks fall, everyone dies." But Player, Use of Weapons, and Against a Dark Background are on my keeper lists.
